3rd Thursday on Dec. 15 Celebrates Our Creative Community
Shop local art, food, and gifts this holiday season

Discover our creative community and meet your holiday shopping needs as you delight in all that downtown Corvallis has to offer! 3rd Thursday on December 15, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, will feature local artists, local food, and local businesses – most of which are at venues within walking distance of downtown. Printed and online maps to the 3rd Thursday venues will be available at each of the participating locations, as well as on the Corvallis Arts Walk website at corvallisartswalk.com.

This new monthly celebration is a collaboration among Corvallis Arts Walk, the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition’s Economic Vitality Action Team, and the Coalition’s Food Action Team. The 3rd Thursday collaboration was initiated by members of the Economic Vitality Action Team who are interested in fostering a thriving local arts and entertainment hub as an economic driver. They reached out to organizers of the Corvallis Arts Walk and the Food Action Team to combine existing efforts into an ongoing 3rd Thursday event in downtown Corvallis.

The goal of the 3rd Thursday program is to establish Corvallis as a destination for local arts and entertainment, local food, and local shopping. By highlighting our rich local arts community, as well as the artistry of our local chefs, local food producers, and local business owners, organizers aim to showcase and celebrate the creative talents that are offered by our community.

The Corvallis Arts Walk is an artist-run organization dedicated to connecting local artists and community members through a monthly in-person and virtual arts walk featuring Corvallis artists. The Sustainability Coalition’s Economic Vitality Action Team has been a co-sponsor of the Buy Local First campaign for more than a decade, and the Coalition’s Food Action Team has organized annual farm-to-table events featuring local restaurants since 2009.

The economic benefits of supporting locally-owned, independent businesses has been well established. Of every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the local economy, while only $13 of every $100 spent at a chain store stays in the community. “Rather than encouraging consumption,” explains Coalition Facilitator Annette Mills, “the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition encourages community members who are making special purchases for the holidays to think ‘LOCAL’ first, before simply making purchases online from national corporations.”

Buying local – whether from our artists, restaurants, or shops – also helps the Corvallis community retain its unique character. According to Americans for the Arts, “From coast to coast and from our smallest rural towns to our largest urban cities, America’s 100,000 nonprofit arts and cultural organizations make their communities more desirable places to live and work every day of the year. The arts provide inspiration and joy to residents, beautify public spaces, and strengthen the social fabric of our communities.”

3rd Thursday provides a great opportunity for local artists, local businesses, and local residents to join together to support our local economy and our creative community throughout the year. Organizers encourage everyone to make downtown Corvallis a regular destination on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. See you on December 15th !
