Equilibrium Painting LLC launched in March 2018 and is a new painting company providing interior and exterior painting service for residential and commercial customers throughout Oregon’s Willamette Valley and Central Coast. Beyond offering traditional painting services, Equilibrium Painting is a fully sustainable ‘green’ painting company that aims to provide a healthier, ecologically friendly option to area home and business owners through better paint products and practices.
Equilibrium Painting was formed by a husband and wife team who, after realizing that the painting industry was still a long way from meeting the needs of a changing society, decided to combine passion, education and professional experience in conservation with previous backgrounds in professional painting and design. Painting contractors have traditionally used and continue to use paints, stains and products that contain high amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, benzene, xylene and other carcinogens that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has linked with high levels of indoor air pollution, outdoor smog creation, cancer and other illnesses. While some contractors have begun to use low VOC paints due to new regulations by the EPA placed on interior and exterior paints, Equilibrium Painting believes that for the health of customers and employees that more can be done. The company researches and uses only high quality zero VOC, and the lowest VOC paints, stains and products on the market. Sustainability also extends beyond just the paint products – the company also concentrates on alternative and ecologically friendly methods of paint preparation, application and disposal to ensure no paint or chemicals run off into nearby storm drains or waterways, and to minimize the impact to soil and plant ecology on work sites. As a sustainable business Equilibrium Painting consistently looks to lessen its footprint through donations to environmental nonprofits; by using sustainably manufactured business supplies, marketing materials and work gear; through support of local businesses; and by providing public education about the effects of VOCs and how to prevent indoor air pollution. Equilibrium Painting hopes that in the near term, the idea of a healthier and more ecologically friendly painting company will allow home and business owners seeking a more sustainable lifestyle a better option for necessary maintenance. Success as a sustainable painting company could help shift the painting industry and the way people think about day to day life. Owner Patrick Bruce says, “Our natural resources are impacted by our daily choices. There are avenues in each industry to improve conservation and environmental awareness, and the painting industry is one we feel can play a major role in helping to improve public and environmental health.”
Equilibrium Painting is currently a partner organization of the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition and is now up for nomination as ‘Sustainable Business of the Year’ at the 2019 Celebrate Corvallis event on January 18th, 2019 sponsored by the Corvallis Chamber of Commerce. The company will also appear at the upcoming Good Earth Home, Garden and Living Show in Eugene, January 18th-20th, 2019 offering information at a booth and providing a free public talk titled Healthy Home, Healthy Family! How to Prevent Indoor Air Pollution.
