The Oregon Garden, one of the state’s most popular destinations, has announced an exciting addition to its “Christmas in the Garden” event. This year’s affair, which features a holiday marketplace with artisan vendors and a display of more than 400,000 twinkling holiday lights, will see the addition of a 3,500 sq. ft. outdoor ice-skating rink to fully complement the holiday experience. Christmas in the Garden will take place Nov. 27 through Jan. 3 (excluding Dec. 24 and Dec. 25). Event hours and activities vary by date; for a complete breakdown, visit www.oregongarden.org/events/christmas-in-the-garden.

“Last year, more than 22,000 people visited Christmas in the Garden, enjoying an authentic and cozy family-friendly event,” explained Brittney Hatteberg, marketing manager for The Oregon Garden. “Our team started conceiving ways to build on the experience, and arrived at the idea of adding an ice skating rink. We are so excited to introduce this addition to our guests this holiday season!”

Upon arrival, visitors board the Holiday Express tram, where they are transported to the Rediscovery Forest festooned with 400,000 holiday lights, including a scene from the North Pole and a re-creation of the South Falls waterfall from nearby Silver Falls State Park. Visitors can then shop from 18 artisan vendors selling handmade goods; go ice skating; take family photos with Santa; sip traditional glühwein, hot buttered rum or hot cocoa; enjoy the sounds of carolers singing festive holiday music throughout the area; and take in the smells and tastes of roasted nuts and traditional German foods. Cozy fire pits and food and drink booths are scattered throughout the forest, creating warm places to gather with family and friends.

General event admission is $6 for ages five and up ($10 on Dec. 10 through Dec. 13); free for children four and under; and $4 for Oregon Garden members. Silverton residents save $1 each Thursday evening with proof of residency. Tickets can be purchased online in advance. Each paid admission receives five $1 off vouchers to be used at booths throughout the market, excluding food and drink from the Oregon Garden booths (one voucher per booth, per purchase, per person). Paid admission during the first visit includes free return visits for the duration of the event. Parking is $5.

The weekend of Dec. 10 through Dec. 13 will also feature visits and photos with Santa Claus and his live reindeer, presented by Dallwig Brothers Building Supply; and pony rides by Canyonview Camp from 5 to 8pm (both events included with general admission).

Ice skating admission is in addition to general event admission and costs $12 to skate and $5 for skate rental; guests may bring their own skates. The ice skating rink will also be open daily throughout the week for those who wish only to ice skate.
